I have to agree with Larry (on the Forum) about this Herbert. There is some beautiful imagery in this (‘like beating one's own fingers/of shrill dissonance’; ‘...oscilloscopes, /on which soft velvet rode astride, /and with a whimper it gave way, /the portal fell, admitting troops/of agile fishes to the sea, ‘) that fits in so well with the flow of the poem. The narrative shakes with passive/aggressive feeling throughout that lacks both simperingness and over-the-top indignation. It drags the reader in and allows for them to react as they wish. For me that is all that one can except from a poem or any work. For me it has a tempo and sound that I admire very much that drew me from the first to last line. Excellent post Herbert one worth coming back to.
