This is one of the great poems of the century. Mood, vision, quaintly exotic locale, abundant sensory data, whimsy, historical accuracy, technical virtuosity, pacing- it's all there. Always interesting, never dull, length perfect, sonata- fact, diversion, back to fact, past-present-back to past form- what it's all about. It suggests the way the present must interrupt the past with its urgency, the Past recognizing itself as the preferred state. Awesome. MM
This is my favourire poem. I suffer from mental illness and the coach journey seems to parallel my journey through my life. I am carried by events outside my control and witness events through a glass. Elizabeth describes normal events and makes them strange and ethereal and wonderful. This is how I experience life. For me, the Moose represents the essential, fecund, natural world which I and the passengers on the coach can only experience indirectly no matter how hard we may try or may yearn for a more direct experience of nature. This may not be a true or accurate reading of the poem. But this is what I take from it. This poem has been worth more than bibles to me.
beautiful poem.. a vivid description..an amazing write..
