The Man Who Never Was Poem by Bryan Sefton

The Man Who Never Was

Spider spinning in a cold white skull
Putting an eye where there never was one
Putting ambition where there never was any
And reason, hanging by a thread

Face unmoving; cold and dull
Mind unmoving, devoid of fun
The spider moves sideways
The eye looks away

Shadow of the spider on the wall of the skull
The ghost of a memory hovering on
Dies as the light of life died out
Unilluminated

The spider moves upward, the eye shows surprise
The skull is praying to God above
Stares unblinking at the cold white moon
Waits for an answer

The spider glitters on the steel web eye
The fly of an idea struggling there
The iris moves and the idea dies
Unpropagated
