The Lesson Poem by Leanna Page Markgraf

The Lesson

Every time you come around
You break me down inside.
You have no problem knowing
How many times you've crushed my pride.

You were meant to take me higher
But you just brought me down
You were meant to save me
But sat back and watched me drown.

Don't be surprised this time
When I don't take your hand.
I'm going to be just fine
On my own I can stand.
You thought I couldn't do it
But now there is no question.
I know I don't need anyone
You taught me that lesson.

My weakness was your love
Now that it's gone I'm getting stronger.
Every day is my own now,
You hold on me is no longer.

You left me here in pain
Now I wish we've never met.
You were the lesson I had to learn
and a mistake I'll never forget.

Don't be surprised this time
When I don't take your hand.
I'm going to be just fine
On my own I can stand.
You thought I couldn't do it
But now there is no question.
I know I don't need anyone
You taught me that lesson.
