George Meredith writes from experience and uses the Lark as metaphor, for the changing times in the countryside where most of the work done by large numbers of men in the fields is gradually being done by machinery and so most of the younger generation move into the newly arrising industrialised towns to work in factories and mills. Thus leaving their elders to cope with increasing destitution and decline. The Lark sings for the Spirits of us all. HW
