The Irony Of Life Poem by DUUT NADJAT ZUBERU

The Irony Of Life

A world where decency is termed as stupidity,
religion being another form of slavery,
education not being the key to success.
A world where negativity is promoted,
whereas positivity is termed as too known.

It's sad how we follow trends and leave our morals behind.
A world where love and loyalty are no more valued.
People think they're the toughest when they leave someone heartbroken.

They call us Gen Z,
but I call us the lost generation - a generation where no one feels safe around the other,
where everyone is cold and toxic, where betrayal and revenge have become a culture of the youth.

I feel different, I think different, and I see different.
I wish everyone was like me, but that is just the irony of life.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem highlights the perceived decline of decency, morality, and positivity in the society. It critiques the way people treat each other, particularly in romantic relationships, where heartbreak and betrayal seem to be normalized. I expressed a sense of disconnection from the values and behaviors promoted by my generation, referring to it as the 'lost generation". I emphasised my unique perspective and values, which differ from those around me. POETIC DEVICES. 1. Imagery and metaphors: The use of vivid imagery and metaphors, such as 'religion being another form of slavery' and 'betrayal and revenge has become a culture of the youth, ' effectively conveys my message. 2. Repetition and rhythm: The repetition of 'A world where' creates a sense of rhythm and emphasizes the themes I am addressing. 3. Contrast: I effectively use contrast to highlight the differences between my values and those of the world around me.
