Thanks, Valsa. Paul Valery is, with the possible exception of Keats, my favourite poet and this is one of his masterpieces. He was buried in this graveyard which overlooks the Mediterranean sea in the South of France. He died in 1945 and received a State Funeral in Paris prior to his interment. The poem comes to mind when I visit a place called Heysham and there is a similar graveyard by the sea overlooked by an ancient church founded by St Patrick.
