The Gilded Cage (Sonnet) Poem by Dipankar Sadhukhan

The Gilded Cage (Sonnet)

A witching spell once bound my youthful sight,
I walked the maze your phantom beauty drew;
In silken traps of false and feigned delight,
I swore a vow to spend my life with you.

Now high-born words are turned to foulest breath,
The queen I crowned now seeks to rule by fear;
Your bitter tongue deals out a living death,
While rhythmic insults fall upon my ear.

I bide in chains for those we call our own,
Two tender blooms within this thorny gate;
Though love is fled and seeds of grief are sown,
I stay a slave to shield them from your hate.

Though witchery has cheated soul and mind,
For love of sons, I leave the world behind.
