The Game I Cannot Win Poem by RACHEL ZARANTONELLO

The Game I Cannot Win

I say it's just a game we play
My heart knows it's not
You played me like a child's puzzle,
color by number or connect the dots

You were fun & easy to play with
Even knowing it was a mistake
When do I call it a total loss, and admit
it hurts more than I can take?

I make bad choices, often, and my
judge of character has gone wrong
I see the good that isn't even there
and probably hasn't been there all along

Well played sir. Your moves were quite clever.
More than you let me see
I tried so hard, for far too long, but
you never cared at all about me

Why do I even try my luck at all?
Play with you again and again?
Strictly just to have a good time
Because this is a game I'll never win.
