The First Line Of A New Poem! Poem by Denis Martindale

The First Line Of A New Poem!

The first line of a new poem starts twinklings in the mind,
Once set free, so they may show him the meanings he might find.
The poet reaches for his pen, or types upon a page,
Or a computer now and then could help him at this stage.
The sparkles harmonise in time, to synchronise each thought.
He contemplates each cherished rhyme that teachers ever taught.
And thus from these spring forth anew the nascent, newborn line.
It comes to me, it comes to you, and he will find it fine.
And should he write a hymn style verse, or free style, come what may,
He senses that he must rehearse new words that come his way.

That first line comes from who knows where? A thousand times and more,
And he proceeds with utmost care and wisdom to explore.
He knows not how his poem ends, but edits just the same,
He now sees verses as new friends, as if each has its name.
Until his time to celebrate, the first and last line won,
His heart and mind collaborate, united until done!
Please let him write once he begins, that he may persevere!
Until the time, at last, he wins the treasures he holds dear!
For poetry has stirred him so, from childhood until now,
Let his collection grow and grow, in every way somehow.

The legacy he leaves behind came from his sacrifice,
From harmonies of heart and mind set free before his eyes!
