The Earthworm Jive Poem by Gabriel Mc Keown

The Earthworm Jive

They say we are
Grubby wriggling soggy
Rain swept kids
Living below earth
In muck and dirt

Spend our lives
Digging and building
Castles and tunnels
Hidden in sand and clay
Allowing air and water
To run away.

Often we hear
Enemies up above
Out to get us
Plodding boot of man
Rasp of spade or rake
Claw or beak of bird
Angry snout of dog.

Our scouts are out
Sense the danger
Give the word
To jump and dive.
We call it plainly
The locomotion
Dynamic dive
To save your hide.

Wriggle to the right
Wiggle to the left
Swivel in the middle
Tighten muscles
Heave the soil
Quietly, with
All your might.

That's the way
To keep you
Safe and happy.
We labelled it
Dynamic
Acrobatic
Earthworm
Jive.

Castles and tunnels

Allowing air and water
To run in soil.

Often we hear
Enemies up above
Plodding boot of man,
Rasp of spade or rake,
Menacing and cruel,
Claw or beak of bird,
Angry snout of dog

Our scouts are out,
Give the word
To jump and dive,
Do the locomotion
Dance,
To save your hide.

Wriggle to the right
Wiggle to the left
Swivel in the middle
With all your might,

That's the way
To keep you
