The Deer And The Sugarcubes Poem by Raj Dronamraju

The Deer And The Sugarcubes

Rating: 5.0

THE DEER AND THE SUGARCUBES

You remind me of when someone feeds deer
A sugarcube in an outstretched hand
Skittish deer, face full of worry and hesitation that loses out to desire for the sugarcube

The couple next door rehearse well-worn repartee about brilliant things and potatoes and I think of the deer unexpectedly snatching the sugarcube

And I think of you full of the fear of my undeniable charm
But with a naked heart that beats so loud, I can hear it over the sound of other diners and piped-in music

Here in a restaurant
I polished reassurance as if it was a dirty glass
I won the moment you followed me out and didn't rejoin your herd
