The Death Of Dollar Tree Poem by Bill Grace

The Death Of Dollar Tree

'Dollar Tree' has died
victim of the Covid virus
that has stalled the land
and been widely avoided
by those who had the luxury
of a more safe defense.

But I mourn the store's passing as a personal loss
much as I would mourn
the death of a friend.
The poetry and economics are lost.
No more can you say to yourself:
'It is only a dollar.'

A place once so simple is no more
very close to becoming like every other store
and with it the guardedness
that always must accompany money
our ultimate theology.
