its about dissolution with all there is to be among other humans.truly depressing Why Hardy with all his success should feel this way is interesting, but then his novels are in the main bleak.. His inner being is laid bare in this poem. How very sad

It is about losing innocence and disillusionment when faced with the corruption of man. It is about betrayal and loss of trust with those you turn to and those closest to you and how it hardens and destroys the soul until you are 'the dead man walking' -
