The Day My Whole World Changed Poem by Marti Omalley marti09877

The Day My Whole World Changed

I remember the day my whole world changed,
My name in their mouths felt twisted and strange.
I walked through the hallway, head down low,
Feeling the weight of things I didn't even know.
They stared and they whispered, then looked away fast,
Like I was a joke that was meant to last.

Every laugh felt sharp, like it cut through my skin,
And I kept asking myself, where do I even begin?
I felt as if I was dying on the bathroom floor,
Back pressed to the stall, heart begging for more.
Tears hit the tile, cold and gray,
Wishing the rumors would just fade away.
I tried to be strong, I tried not to cry,
But it's hard to stand tall when you don't know why.
Why they believed what was never true,
Why they decided to turn on you.

At lunch I sat quiet, pretending I'm fine,
Tracing the cracks in the table's design.
My phone kept buzzing, my stomach would drop,
Hoping each time that the messages would stop.
I started to doubt every word that I said,
Replaying the lies that echoed in my head.
Was I too loud? Was I too much?
Did I somehow deserve their touch—
The stares, the smirks, the cruel little jokes,
The way their laughter choked my throat?
Some days I begged just to disappear,
To shrink from the whispers ringing in my ear.
I'd look in the mirror and barely see
The same strong person I used to be.

But even in pieces, even in pain,
I showed up to school again and again.
With swollen eyes and a shaking breath,
Feeling embarrassed almost to death.
They never saw the nights I prayed,
Or how much damage their words had made.
They never knew how hard I fought
Against every lie their voices brought.
And maybe the rumors thought they'd win,
Maybe they tried to bury me in sin.

But I'm still here, I'm still standing tall,
Even after I felt like I'd lost it all.
Because I learned that lies can shout and scream,
But they can't erase who I've always been.

They tried to define me with words untrue
