The Dark Daughter Comments

The things of the world will be bare and down to harsher and cruel earth realities. How will she bear with? We think and think about as the paths of life are never smooth, go winding taking turns and curves.

My daughter, how will be it the paths of her life? A fatherly heart so full of care feels it unawares. A dark world before her is to tread on shedding and shaking off the fatherly shadow.

The Dark Daughter as a poetical piece reminds us of the inhuman scenes and sights of the Sati system, child marriage and the dowry trauma.

Shiva with the dead body of Sati unable to carry the load, staggering and running with tells a different tale of life so filled with the concepts of honour, pride, ego, hypocrisy, power and pomp.

Indirectly the poem speaks of social disparity, injustice subjected to womankind and the understanding of the womanly kindness and psyche. What is that hurts her feminine self and psyche?

The poem can be related to Nissim's Hymns in Darkness, Daruwalla's Bombay Prayers, Nazrul's Shyama Sangeet, Blake's The Tiger and The Little Black Boy, Lamb's The Chimney Sweeper and Palth's Daddy and so.

How to explain the unexplained is the case in hand. What it has not been explained, how to explain that? Why is Kali dark? Why is light emanating from darkness? Light and darkness are the two sides, aspects of this Creation.

It is a poem of some mythical base which cuts the cultural ice of our ethos, psyche and the mystical comprehension of life and the world. What it is dark will remain as the darker things so elemental to this Creation can never be laid bare.
