The City In The Sea Poem by Michael Walker

The City In The Sea

I see a city sink into the sea,
And waters flow where people used to be;
The churches fade into eternity,
And streets bleed silver blood to be set free.

Domes once floated on the lilting waves
In golden sunsets from the distant shore,
And spires rose to glorious aves,
But now cathedral bells shall toll no more.

The markets and the ghettoes slowly drown!
The mazes of displays become submerged;
Cafes and masquerades of every clown
Vanish, without so much as a dirge.

The spirits of the dead from this city
Beseech us, 'Please, will someone show pity? '
