If one knows the life story of Mary “Perdita” Robinson the poem assumes a far greater depth of meaning than perhaps initially presents itself. Her early life may have indeed reflected that of the butterfly while her later infirmity and poverty necessitated she assume more the manner of the bee. A fascinating woman of many talents, not least among which were here literary skills.
