The Ancient Ones Poem by Juan Olivarez

The Ancient Ones

Rating: 5.0

</>There is a timeless legend,
Among the indigenous people,
Of the great,
American southwest.
The legend of the Anasazi.
The name is of Navajo origin,
And simply means 'The Ancient Ones.'
We do not know what they,
Called themselves,
Or what they were called,
By other tribes.
They were the original,
Cliff dwellers.
The Anasazi had a highly,
Advanced civilization.
So highly advanced, that they,
Actually traded with the Mayans,
Of Central America.
And their culture flourished,
For many, many centuries.
The Anasazi held the belief,
That there are many worlds,
Separated by a mere veil,
A distortion in time,
Or space.
To them, our world,
Was the third world.
They had left their own world,
The first world,
Through a hole in time and space,
A porthole to another dimension,
If you will.
They were running from,
A 'great Evil.'
One day,
Not a period of months,
Not a period of years,
One day,
The Anasazi simply vanished.
Their recorded history,
Simply stops.
Their whole vast culture,
One day,
Was simply gone.
Legends abound,
About what happened to them,
Or where they went.
One ancient tale retold,
A million times.
Says simply,
They went back,
To the first world.
That the old evil,
Had surfaced again,
And that they had used the portal,
To return,
To their own world.
Where today,
They await the chance,
To return.

I'm glad I found this one! It honestly speaks to my soul; I have hiked the Mesa Verde, the cliff dwellings, etc., and thus became very interested in the lore of the people. This poem is right at home within my spirit. Thank you for writing it so well Juan. It brings back to life my deep desire to return there, Lord willing, may it be soon.
