The Amazing Dholes

The Amazing Dholes

the poet in me.can't.keep quiet
this is.a feast with a king-like-diet

pack of eight.dholes and four cubs
in dire need of a sustaining grub

hits jackpot in an adult sambar
in the wild, to kill.for food- who can bar?

the mismatched.female sambar
gets deathly cuts from the canine molars

the deer can't counter the attacking dogs;
felled down and soon resembles a wood log

the community feast begins there and then
dholes are excused from saying their Amens

every dog gets.bellyful, its due
even.the cubs have morsels few

as meal ends, a part of deer's.skeleton
and its inedible hide, remain uneaten

the dogs quench their thirst from the lake
and proceed to their siesta to take

amazing to watch their gusto as they eat
molars go chuk-chuk-chuk with tender meat

this killing and eating has a cause
these dholes deserve our applause

a dog-eats-dog world is where they live
fending for oneself, it is tough to thrive

dhole is.an endangered species
in their.fight, one and all they can't please

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
During my recent trip to K.Gudi forest, BR Hills, Karnataka, I watched a group of dholes devouring a female sambar, a large deer. The entire process of eating was over in half an hour. Dholes are wild dogs prevalent in tropical forests of India. They are an endangered species. They hunt in packs and kill only when hungry. Killing process needs lots of energy. Each dhole weighs about 15 kg.A sambar is a vulnerable species of deer, found in tropical Indian forests. Each sambar weighs about 150 kg. Dhole has powerful molars and strikes its prey at vulnerable spots and within a few minutes the prey is felled down.
In Christianity, it is usual to say a short prayer before every meal. The prayer ends with 'In Jesus's name, Amen.'In the current context, the meal being taken by the dholes is a very important and solemn part of their life.
Dhole population is about 2500 adults, mostly in the Asiatic region.
