The 2nd Deadliest In 20th Century Poem by Sophie Allyah

The 2nd Deadliest In 20th Century

September 01,1984—

Typhoon Nitang struck the country—
The second deadliest tropical cyclone
in the Philippines in the 20th century

Surpassing Typhoon Amy's record in 1951:
During one of the worst economic crises—
In just four days— Nitang made landfall
after Tropical Storm June hit
the Northern part of the Philippines;
It brought nothing but mischiefs
giving only concerns and fears
Killing 1,492 people most are from
Surigao del Norte— It was the worst typhoon
to ever hit there in 20 years.

Nearly 400 million pesos or over
7.5 million US dollars from foreign
countries were generously supplied;
The damaged was estimated
nearly 12 billion pesos or 230 million
US dollars nationwide.
