One night I woke up feeling scared,
the house was quiet, but I didn't feel safe.
I walked down the hallway in the dark,
and found her sitting, waiting like a spark.
I said, "Mum, I don't feel okay."
She smiled and wiped my fears away.
Then gently pulled me into her hug,
and said, "That's what I do, my love.
I'm here to help you when things go wrong,
to make you feel safe, to help you feel strong.
I stay up late, I wake up early too
that's what I do, I do it for you."
As I grew older, I started to change,
wanted more freedom, started acting strange.
We didn't always see eye to eye,
and sometimes I made her cry.
Still, every time I felt lost or small,
she answered my call, no matter how tall.
She never said "I told you so, "
just held me and let the past go.
She packed my bags when I had to leave,
and smiled through tears I couldn't see.
She said, "The world is big, and you must try
but know I'm always here nearby."
When I think about who I am,
and all the things I've learned from her hands,
I see her love in all I do,
in every choice, in every truth.
