The fingers illustrate the principle that unity is strength! Though each finger differs in size and importance, unless they work in tandem, certain functions cannot be performed. Whether we are small or big, each one has a role in the scheme of things! This general truth is brought out through an apt example!

A very fruitful meditation upon unity and integrity. I will never look at my hands the same! This poem has a strength of community in it that we do not often see in the poetry of the West, with all our over-emphasis on individualism, as if one finger could make a fist.
