This is absolutely brilliant, Kevin. There is indeed a social dynamic that seeks to beat conformity into individual expression. Conform, we say, be a man. There is only one model. There is a man, and all else. If one is to be a man, the boy must be conditioned to accept that what does not destroy only serves to make one stronger. This is how the society wants each boy to behave! From childhood onward, he is trained to conceal his genuine emotions and put on a mask of bravery. The reiteration to take everything in his stride, makes him think that expressing soft feelings is unmanly! Thus he comes to believe that a rigid attitude is the right attitude! A poem with a deep psychological impact!
