In the mantra that he received from his guru, Sri Ramakrishna, namely that service to man is service to God (Shiva Jnane Jiva Seva) , he saw the key to a practical synthesis between the deeply rooted religiosity of the Hindus and the necessary socio-economic reforms for the millions of people in India.
