Survivors... Poem by Denis Martindale

Survivors...

When Winter comes, and wolves grow cold,
They still embrace each day.
They've learned how Winter takes its hold
And keeps the warmth at bay.
They don't give up! They don't give in!
They strive to find a way!
If not, they know that none can win,
Nor find their share of prey!

Yes, predators must kill and eat,
And though this fact annoys,
Starvation's deadlines they must meet,
You see, they've got no choice!
Survivors struggle, hopeful still,
Without warm Summer's joys,
And now and then, each climbs a hill
And howls a mournful voice.

It's then that Man becomes aware,
That wolves hunt, too, nearby.
That's when Man moves about with care,
And keeps an open eye!
Yes, Man goes hunting just the same,
With just as much to try,
And there's no point in casting blame,
Since no man wants to die.
