Summer Has Slipped Away Poem by Deanna Samuels

Summer Has Slipped Away

Where have all those glorious summer months gone?
Feels as though it was only yesterday
when buds were bursting into full leaved verdant green
though now, that fresh bloom has gone
preparing already to change to autumnal dress

These past summer months have been kind and warm
Folk everywhere enjoying the long sunny days
Now, the evening hours are drawing in
Darkness quickly pervading into the last of daylight
Enveloping privacy and seclusion for outside dining

Those happy sounds of children's laughter edging away
Retiring from playing in the street or garden
returning to their homes for TV and evening meal
Parents making sure staying safe inside,
far away from danger as darkness descends

Birds chirrup their last calls and trills quickly
instinctively knowing daylight is drawing to a close
Squirrels search hurriedly while rabbits quickly scurry,
hunting for last meal of nuts or sweet bladed grasses
before re-tracking to nests and dens for night rest

As darkness falls, quietness permeates the scene
The sun's last rays become long and shadowy
Ever lower in sky as each day falls away
The short autumnal evenings close in
The new season begins
