This is a sad poem as ballads tend to be. But it's a cumulative sadness, you can feel the unhappy ending in each stanza and nothing stops the relentless movement of that four-line Ballad Stanza. It doesn't move fast because there is so much story to be told and we really get to know the main character. I wish I could somehow enter the poem and offer help, but I wouldn't belong to that world. I'd probably be invisible like a ghost, I'd be closer to the tragic loss but no closer to saving her than I am sitting in this chair, reading your words and witnessing the inevitable end.
