Wonderful, thought-provoking poem. I hope you are still with us and doing well, Gordon. Many in my family have had cancer. Some survived, some did not. Even those who are not aware of any medical problems should live each day as if it is their last. It very well could be.

Cancer.... an opus awakening song of all too many. Life's responsibilities cause so many casualties, the greatest being the indifference to the smell of a rose. I'm sorry to learn of your condition.

Amuse- to not think. Our culture is evolving into a very passive milieu that encourages us to not think, just be entertained and passively programmed. The beginning of understanding and the oldest form of human investigation is to simply contemplate. To stop and think.... Thanks for the reminder, and may God bless you through this challenging phase of your journey.

Very deep Really got me at the last stanza relating how he never took time to ponder, consider, and appreciate these everyday surroundings until getting a wake up call Would be nice to make time to really answer these questions and others! ! Thanks. Feels helpful and necessary.

I stop a few times to think what it'd be without the nights and the dotted stars it often brings. I hope stoping to think will bring you relief Gordon. Brilliant poem.

This really reminds me of the last chapter I read in Haruki Murakami's Kafka on the Shore. Individually, we never truly realize what is precious to us until we realize that it may be fading from our view. For all the sorrows we experience as a result, we must grow more hopeful, for otherwise we might not have strength to endure. Just judging from this poem, I think you have the will to continue seeing the world around you, and I sincerely believe that you will recover. Best of luck and best wishes.

Hi Gordon, I hope you get well soon...cancer if detected in early stage is curable...But yes, even when things are normal, one should live one's today as though it is the last one...

Your poem sums up the essence of human life as it should be and how much richer we are for the free gifts of Nature only if we paused to notice and appreciate them. I wish you speedy recovery and look forward to reading many more of your inspired poems. - Prakash Yardi, Mumbai, India
