Stewardess of New Age—A poem by Denis Mair
Translated into ODIA by Bharati Nayak

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is the ODIA translation of poem -' Stewardess of New Age ' by Denis Mair.Itranslated it into my native language ODIA on his request. Here is the originalpoem byDenis Mair.Stewardess of new Age Stewardessof New AgeWhen she first began work on the big jet linersOcean-hopping flights made an enviable career.Technology crafted knife-blades to cut through the skySo a hundred-ton craft could ride on the wind. And the stewardess' fuselage is my own dream of flightBut my dream falls behind her takeoff velocity. She is a believer in New Age philosophyTrusting her fate to a great pair of hands, Turbulence of air is unsteadiness of faith, Should a downward plunge come, her soul will win free. But I sit in this airplane, like a hurled stoneMy broken heart is working like a radar screenTo search out where the world falls on calamity; From outward to inward I sense the resonance, And this is the extent of my spiritual experience. She is well-poised, as if perched in flightBut I am always smelling aviation fuel; The metal around her gleams brightlyAs she is pushed ahead by roaring fire, But as we penetrate the roiling atmosphereI keep sensing embryonic typhoons. As the wheel of time advancesBig jets are not on the cutting edge, A jetliner trundles along like an airborne busAnd weary lines mark the stewardess' face. But that high-and-mighty gleam is still in her eyesBecause she still trusts in heavenly equationsTo transport her on wings into heavenly blue spaces. Love this. I get the same feeling from new age spirituality, disembodied while flying high.

Thank you Prabir Gayen for kindly reading my poem and giving your valuable comment.I did not know that you could read Odia language.Mirabai (1498 to 1546) A.D. was a great devotee of Lord Krishna and her name is taken with reverence by Hindus. Her poems are devoted to Lord Krishna and are known as Mira Bhajans.Mira Bhajans have been made into songs and are very popular world wide.Any remote reference of my poems with that of Mira Bai is a matter of much pride for me.
