It doesn't take St. John long to change the speaker's mind, which suggests there is a great current of faith rolling below us but connected to us, like an underground river, and it wells up into the mind of the suffering person when the saint directs his/her attention to it. And I notice the saint doen't say much, he doesn't lecture them, he makes a few subtle gestures or says a few compassionate words and that current of faith wells up with its redeeming force.
