The refrain 'Way Down South in Dixie' is effective. In the South, the worst crimes against negroes took place. Like the hanging of her young black lover.
What hurts the most is that Christ was not white, but that's how most Europeans see Him, because that's how He was portrayed in art. And because of that, the speaker in this poem feels disconnected from Him during a time of evil and tragedy. And too many white people felt justified because they envisioned a God who looked like them, but not like their neighbors.
a very sad poem about a tragic event, that should never of happened in a so called civilised society?
Way Down South in Dixie (Bruised body high in air) I asked the white Lord Jesus What was the use of prayer. Truly what was the use of prayers since HE could not save her but a Black Jesus could have done.
