Sometimes Even Stones Shed Tears! Poem by Mohabeer Beeharry

Sometimes Even Stones Shed Tears!

For no reason of mine
I see myself in the dark.
My heart tight.

My room is dark with fear,
My children terrified.
What shall I tell them?

They barely know what life is,
Other than a few frolics
And bike rides,
How shall I explain it to them?

The boat is rocking
For them, for me
For everyone.

Who shall I tell not to put the light out?
The fear is alive, gnawing
Searing!
Devastating!

Who cares when the stars come out
And when they go?
When the flowers bloom
And when they wane?

The moon is pale, cold and jaundiced
Thunder clouds stand still,
Alone, isolated, behind the curtains,
I dare not look out.

I dare not listen
Why oh why?
Have we come so far, oh God
To be hurriedly dumped into a crude unholy hole?

Have we not taught ourselves
To be safe in your shadow,
Only suddenly to find ourselves alone!
Questions are many, answers none.

I can only survive till I can,
My candle will not last for ever either
Soon the light will go,
And darkness will prevail.

Darkness comes when light goes,
But Lord, light does not always come when darkness leaves
No sunrise will ever hail the parting of darkness again.

Fear will remain
The wounds in the heart will cry,
The freshness of the air we breathe will never be the same
As humanity disintegrates slowly
And hopelessly.

Light is yours
And eternal too.
But that little candle light in my room is mine.
I made it from the tallow of my sweat
And blood
From my tears, my pain and loss.

This I offer at your altar,
Save my small lonely room from going dark.
Let the light last
Let my hope last
Have mercy for our tears and suffering.
