Someone Poem by D A Phinney

Someone

Someone-in-charge to someone said:
'Get thee hence or get thee dead;
Make thee a womb for the world's woe,
For God's redder ritual, get in the flow.
Have we not slaved to make thee free?
Have we not served this bloody spree?
Have we not sinned with sacred fire
To sanctify what all desire?
Have we not sacrificed for thee?
Haven't we? Haven't we? '
'So what, ' he said; 'Mox nix.' said he.

Someone-in-charge enraged spoke:
'You'll go dishonored or go for broke!
There's no in-between and no bounds are out;
Nothing is foul, no warning shout.
Off to the race, Boy! Odds on your side;
Keep to the rail or take it out wide!
Go for the goal or the two points inside!
Point to the bleachers and give it a ride!
On your toes! Watch the tag! To the earth, Brother, slide!
And what if you do lose? At least you'll have tried.
Did I not hear you 'legiance swear
With standard eyes and standard stare?
Did I not, Son, see lionly pride?
Didn't I? Didn't I? '
'Not so, ' quoth he; 'Game over, I lied.'

Someone-in-charge became cool ice.
'This is the end, no more Mr. Nice:
Pick up that weapon and get in line;
You'll shoulder yours or answer to mine.
Now is the time for all good men-boys
To prop up ideals with government toys.
Love your foe, fine: he holds us together,
From our sky-breaking bombs to our steel-toed leather;
Unlocking Progress, Adversity's keys
Have kept us on the run since we dropt from the trees.
So show him you love him, and for Cupid's darts
Fire these tracer rounds straight to his heart.
Make all-out love, for you'll never get over
The mutual rape with your enemy-lover.
Would I not tell you if it were not true?
Would I not teach you experience new?
Would I not show you you're most alive
When Death is astride you and still you survive?
Would I not kill you? Would I lie to you?
Wouldn't I? Wouldn't I? '
'Progress, ' said he, 'can't stop, ' he sighed.
Click, Bang! Somebody, somewhere, died.
