Someday I May Have The Honor Poem by Grant House

Someday I May Have The Honor

In deciding on who to vote for
Who to represent our community
In local, state and national government
I look for someone who knows their people
Who interacts with us like family, like a friend
Who cares deeply and who joins in
Participating, engaging, getting to know us
I vote for the person who will take us with them in their heart
Who is guided by a love for the environment that sustains us
Who celebrates the workers
Small businesses owners
Our main streets and side streets
People from both sides of the tracks
And those along the tracks
I vote for the one who welcomes visitors and new comers
Who honors the first peoples and never forgets their struggle
Who understands the value of those who seek refuge here
Those who give us their future generations, an invaluable gift
I am looking for the one who is kind and thoughtful
The one with joy in their eyes
The human being who respects all faiths
Whose life experience has graced them with empathy
That person who holds our health and well being high among their priorities
Who believes in their soul that no one should be left out
Who holds as truth that their highest responsibility is owed to the lowest among us
Who step by step has grown a capacity for leading by listening
Who embodies expertise in working with other leaders to make good decisions for the people they lead
This person has earned the privilege to represent us
Has earned our vote
I am guided this way in this election
My choices clearer

Might you be a person like that
One who will rise to this calling
If so
Someday I may have the honor
To vote for you
