A magnificent piece with fascinating imagery! 'Only the busy beetle Tap-tapping in the wall, Only from the forest The screech-owl's call, Only the cricket whistling While the dewdrops fall' A poem to be loved by all categories of readers forever!

Read this first time ever in my edition of Poets and Poetry in fourth grade back in 1954. It burst out of the subconscious unbeckoned a few minutes ago when I went to pick up the phone and there was silence at the other end!

I could only remember the first line of this wonderful poem which I learned,70 years ago, at school in England. Google supplied the rest. Happy memories have come flooding back. Thank you.

I love this poem, I have never forgotten it from Nursery school when I was 5 & I have just celebrated my 80th birthday, isn’t it strange how we forget what happened yesterday but a poem has stuck in my head since I was about 5 yrs old, beautiful

I loved this poem, learned it when I was in Primary school, could never remember the Cricket line though, but have it now! Thanks Walter. Nice to see so many Someone fans.

I also learnt it when I was very young, feeding my imagination and it still does at 66, a lovely evocative poem.

This was the first poem I learned in my infants class at about age six. I remember reciting it to my mum who was so impressed that she made me recite it to every friend or relative who came to visit. I remember the whole thing to this day, almost 70 years later.
