I agree with Kelly - this is a beautiful poem. The pacing is slow but not sluggish, it is written on the edge of sleep, so to speak, but it is not vague. You don't say anything about the two characters and yet the context assures us of their good will, their decency. But I was startled by the speaker's association of falling asleep and dying. This association is almost a cliche but not here. It is such a vivid, sharp, sudden perception by the speaker, it sent a shiver down my spine. Not of fear, no, not that, rather it was the opposite: you made this thought of dying so intimate, so much a part of the speaker's comfort at that moment, so peaceful, it caught me by surprise. And then I too realized: I'm thinking of death without fear, as a stage in life that's like so many others, a crossing over no more in fear but peace. I want such nights.
