This poem does two thoings: it takes a core idea - theprimacyof love as an experiencem of higher union - and restates in a dizzying variety of ways until theidea is thoroughly internalizedmintheread. AND itm trsces the waysin whichsuch a universal love spreads through a community gaining more adherents. and at its heart the poem celebrates the radical freedom of love, as in Hart Cranes passage, AND SO I ENTERED THE BROKEN WORLD TO TRACE THE VISIONARY COMPANY OF LOVE, ITS VOICE AN INSTANT IN THEWIND... And I'm hearing echoes from the 1960s, when such idealism was actually a daily prospect. What happened?
