When I was a boy we were good friends I made pies out of you when you were wet And in childhood's remembered summer weather We roughandtumbled together We were very close.. Sweet memories. a fine poem.

But suddenly it was winter And you seemed so cold and dirty That I stayed indoors and acquired A taste for girls and clean clothes....life suddenly starts to seek the indoor path where the peaceful mind lives gradually but outdoor the aroma of soil calls to enjoy entirely.... great poem

A rather witty poem on the surface, so typical of Roger Mcgough, but with an underlying depth that addresses the vagaries of the human condition.I'm particularly impressed by the way it moves effortlessly from childhood to late adulthood. Seemingly, soil symbolises death and the passing of time.; which the poet will 'avoid'...' as long'as' he can.

anytime to call would be the wrong time I'll avoid you as long as I can.........................A very sad poem, no soil anymore? Because you have become a strictly city man? Congratulations on being chosen as The Modern Poem Of The Day. FRIDAY 6 May 2020. Reagrds, SFC the Netherlands

A modern poem with a feel of an old, with a solid narrative, not a line that does not make sense, how unlike many we read today!
