nothing more than what a long gone
generation called an idiot box
something you stared into
and it made you stupid.

Loved this poem Mark. The social media is dominating our lives. Top marks for this intelligent poem. And to my favourite too.
The last verse is one step ahead. These devices are watching you, following you and making you do things.
So very true! You have nailed it Mark.. The Idiot box and the smart phone will together make us complete zombies. We will just forget to use our brains, hands and legs.
and your repetition of 'waiting for the images to make you laugh maybe cry or belch' was GOOD ;)
Let's not forget The Price Is Right, Jeapardy, and The Loretta Young Theater! ! ! And The Wizard of Oz, yearly for years! !
I give this poem ***** five stars. Ah, for the 'Good Old Days'....[ 1950s and onward into the 21st century ].... As a kid I 'grew up with' I Love Lucy, The Lone Ranger and Tonto, Jack Benny, Red Skelton, Jackie Gleason etc.
We (wife and I) have 3 TVs in our current home; 2 of them were already here in this 'furnished' house two years ago. NONE of them are 'hooked up'. NOW we have internet! ! !
I've gladly accepted my stupidity since my childhood....(and beyond, but not so MUCH) .... 'IDIOT BOX' aka TV brought me MANY, MANY, MANY hours of entertainment. (cont.)
O yes, so much entertainment...You listed a few programs I remember well. Missing, though, is You bet your Life. The idea was brilliant--create a standup comedy series and disguise it as a quizz show. Ahhh yes, that idiot b...I mean, Babysitter. Thanks, Bri.
Mark(?) , I LIKED the whole poem and LOVED the last stanza. ***** five stars. And I can 'see you' through YOUR monitor. bri : )
Its the absolute truth! . Now that we have phones for computers, we are essentially living through our devises, devising ways to have virtual cults. Smartphones Idiot Boxes 2.0. Well written,
Social traps. New and Old. And that give no meaning. To life, nor to have or hold.
Social media has some pros and cons but we can't bypass this as we live in the contemporary society.
Very true. But an awareness of those pros and cons is vital. Thank you so much for reading, Dillip,
2) Another work of great proportions, M.J.! Simply SUPERB! ! !
A biting commentary on the destructiveness of social media. Made me think of 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Truman Show. So very tragic to watch all these children, young adults and other adults allow social media to control their lives.
Thank you so very much, Richard. What I find most tragic is how easily manipulation takes place, and how easily the youth can simply miss it.
They watch over you, every movement, every blink of an eye....the most annoying part of social media. I am trying my best just to dodge PH so it doesn't fill my box with names of the same poets again and again! So glad today I have couple of new poet's names in!
Too true, Savita! Thanks for the comment and for reading.
