A concise, succinct poem that says a lot. A man who has lost his parents, the family home, any further education, one leg. There is not much more to lose. A bleak future lies ahead, yet he can now understand 'no winner, no loser'. Crime is like that, if that is what you mean. Ernest Hemingway, 'Man is not made for defeat' From his great novel 'The Old Man and the Sea'.

Thank you Michael. The 1967 - 1970 civil war in Nigeria left about 2million people dead in the eastern part of Nigeria (Biafra) . Many of those alive lost parents and other relations.Many were permanently maimed and the war effect is still felt today. Funny enough in 1970 when the war ended, the Nigerian government declared it a NO VICTOR, NO VANQUISH.
