Smiling Eyes Poem by Franklin M Kline

Smiling Eyes

Beneath the Northern California night skies,
Where the truth stays hidden behind smiling eyes,
There lives a woman with an awful face,
So she hides it behind a mask of silk and lace.

Her eyes, like stars in Twilight's dance,
With just one glance, she can lure a man's heart into a trance.
Like a serpent, she will lay in wait,
To devour his soul like a hungry snake.

She wove her webs in silver threads,
In sheets made of silk,
satin, and velvet bedspreads,
Yet her poison makes all her victims as good as dead.

Her laughter rings like crystal chimes,
In hollow halls of deceptive rhymes.
She charms with grace in perfect times,
And hides her sins in well-planned lines.

I trusted her, this radiant queen,
Whose heart is cold, whose hands unclean.
She paints her love in shades of green,
Yet spits out wrath so cold and obscene.

She spoke of dreams in honeyed tones,
While hearts she shatters, like brittle bones.
Her brief affection are but fleeting groans,
Her true self masked by hollow moans.

In shadows deep, her secrets lie,
Beneath the surface, a smile implies.
A fractured heart, a silent cry,
Of all the truths she would deny.

I learned too late the cost of trust,
In one who turns all gold to rust.
Her promises of love were only lust,
Her words mere lies, unjust, unjust.

Yet from the ruins, I arose,
A brand new man with a heart still beating,
not made of stone,
For this new man is still of flesh and bone.

For trust misplaced, a lesson learned,
In fires of pain, wisdom earned.
To see the truth where love once burned,
And guard thee heart that once was turned.

So heed this tale of love's demise,
Beware the lure of moonlit skies.
For not all beauty, truth implies,
Some hearts are cold behind warm smiling eyes.
