This poem is a debt of honour - after a mere 72 years - to my six-year-old self, who was quite clear about this relationship, and had frequent friendly words with that best friend about it; but who allowed himself to be persuaded in later years, that it was a far more complicated picture...
This is infinitely more appropriate (and of course poetic) than 'The Lord's Prayer' which frankly has always struck me as pretty selfish.. I mean, it's a bit rude to ask for your daily bread before you go on to the humility and forgivenes bit, right? And of course it seeks no understanding of what constitutes a sin as you do in this philosophical, engaging work of art. Hell (oops wrong word) the more I think about it the more taken I am by it. t x
