Silent Sleep The Dead Comments

Though the sun had begun bleeding in the West
With an explorer's gait, I walked jumping over gutters
My track, flanked with knee high grass and nettles
Also wild bushes of all kinds that grew in clusters

It is glad that you have completed five hundred poems here in the base of life and death. The essence of the poem is nice and touching. Here i quote....Oh Death! You are the mighty leveler of lives With your indiscriminate hands when you strike All differences are ironed out, all distinctions erased Devoid of any rank, here sleep the king and the slave alike It is really a beautiful poem. Visited time and again.

Valsa often writes her poems in the classical style of Persian and Urdu poets, though she does not know Persian or Urdu. Starting a poem with a few introductory stanzas, then coming to the main topic and ending with the essence of the poem. Here is the essence of this marvelous poem: - Oh Death! You are the mighty leveler of lives With your indiscriminate hands when you strike All differences are ironed out, all distinctions erased Devoid of any rank, here sleep the king and the slave alike

It is difficult to single out any one of your poems as the best or my favorite, as you are a talented writer. But this effort was worth reading over many times and going on my favorites list. What fortune to have your 500th be so marvelous, meaningful and profound.

Congratulations, Valsa ji. Once again, I have seen the shades of nature do a prologue in this terrific poem and set the stage against the backdrop of a cemetery for a solemn and sombre dramatic act about the inevitability of death and how it does impact the dead or their future generations or the absence of any impact, whatsoever. The concluding stanza sums it all beautifully in a philosophical manner. Thanks for sharing the poem which is no less than a feast to the mind and the spirit of a reader.

Thank you so much Rajnish sir for your beautiful comment! I feel 'great'! With such flair for English language, I always regret that you do not write poems in English, though you often write poems in Hindi your Mother tongue

Loved most the end of the poem when a great truth is revealed we all become equal, melting into horison: Oh Death! You are the mighty leveler of lives With your indiscriminate hands when you strike All differences are ironed out, all distinctions erased Devoid of any rank, here sleep the king and the slave alike

well, you guys may be amateurs, but i'll have you know i got paid once when i sent a poem to a wealthy friend. ok, he paid me to NOT write more poems. : ( ================================ favorite lines (so far) : There is a muffled horror all around the place Even the leaves chant a sad refrain ............very nice. ................. and nice photo. you know blue birds like to sit on tombstones searching, i think, for ground-crawling insects and such. but i never heard a blue bird sing in a cemetery; i guess they are too respectful. AND more favorite lines: They have become inseparably one with the elements And they lie here motionless exuding a strange calm..................... sounds good to me! ! i like the rhyming. but ya know.............. in Egypt the 'kings' had separate, very special burial places, complete with precious possessions. that's the way i want to be buried: with my transistor radio and ice cream and pizza. thanks for sharing, Valsa. remind me when you reach 1000. i mean poems, not years! bri :) [a fan]

Valsa what a worthy poem to mark your 500th poem - one which pays homage to the Dead to whom we owe one indisputable duty - To Remember Them - this you have with measured rhythms and eloquent words. Despite the fact that many names have been lost, and souls forgotten, your poem performs the spiritual task of remembrance and honor that their progeny can no longer fulfill. The passages stood out for me with special clarity and depth: 1) EACH DEAR PRESENCE HAS BECOME AN ABSENCE that captures all the human sorrow of our mortal fate,2) THEY HAVE BECOME INSEPARABLY ONE WITH THE ELEMENTS This is one of the consolations we have human s can turn to in our loss of loved ones - that their physical remains return to the Earth that bore them and the re-cycle of life that the Earth supports. It's not as consoling as the spirit's immortality, but it's just as genuine. See Message Box for the rest of my 500th poem Celebration. First, Maestro, an encore of music!

Thanks to Poet Valsa, my Friend who is both a teacher and a writer, I lighted on this 500th poem she has posted in PH, to share with all of us who like to read poetry, especially by people who love literature and its refractions in life's variegated Muses. This poem reminds me of Thomas Gray's famous Elegy in a Country Churchyard.. I like Valsa George's lines on the Sleep of Death as a leveller, and wish she continues to encourage readers to find ideas and impressions with resonance in our modern urban, suburban, new-rich, new-poor lives. Hi - Dear Valsa, congratulation, for touching the distant milestone of 500 poems. I wish your stride never stops and have more fuel to move ahead and ahead. Here in this poem, you opened the blanket, laid over the the body after death and scripted a detailed analogy with the eyes of a dead man, as experienced. It is excellent and subjective. Thanks for sharing.

Oh! What a great write it is! A true depiction has been drafted on the reality of life and death. So nicely and aptly presented here having excellent collocation. The general truth that reveals in your pen is....I stand with a heavy heart by these moss grown wrecks Thinking I too shall lie here once, devoid of all opulence Leaving all my hard earned possessions behind Without a name, thoroughly forgotten by the populace. So many thanks for this marvellous poem that I like most. .....10

Valsa, my friend, this is simply wonderful. Thank you for inviting me to read it. And what a marvelous picture you found to go with it! Congratulations on your 500th poem. I'm sure I will never write that many. Old cemeteries fascinate me. Although it's not nearly as good as this one, you might enjoy my poem THE GRAVEYARD. Thanks again for sharing this with us.
