'Shiver Me Timbers' Poem by Ima Ryma

'Shiver Me Timbers'

'Shiver me timbers' pirates said
In works of fiction as oath mock
When something weird happened that led
The pirates to a state of shock.
Based on real nautical slang that
Referred to wooden timbered ships
Which were the pirates' habitat.
The wood would 'shiver' in bad tips.
Many a pirate also had
Need for a peg leg made of wood,
And sometimes when the ship rocked bad,
Overboard went the leg, not good!

Sunk below the cold ocean deep,
One more 'shiver me timbers' 'bleep.'
