Thank you for your comments. Yes I was thinking of particularly of old people abandoned by relatives and this time of year (at 73 I might be next!)

Sadly, there are many people in exactly that same situation. I agree with D.N. Rebb's comment.

This poem reminds me of the sad faces you see at any nursing home around this time of the year. Compared to other cultures, we sort of abandon our elderly and let them wither in the hands of others. A lot are alone at Christmas
