Scream Of The Ewes Poem by Colin Ian Jeffery

Scream Of The Ewes

(Ewes only scream when lambs are taken from them)

Flock of sheep munching grass on a hillside
Mothers with prancing lambs in sunshine
Happy, carefree, joyous together, caring.
Days sweet and full of love, so precious
Lambs thinking it never ends, always together.
Men arrive to catch and haul the lambs away
Away from ewes to slaughter for human food.
Lambs, three months old, lives cruelly cut short
Mothers in desperate panic scream in anguish
Against loss of cherished lambs, shrill, piercing
Never munching grass together again on a hillside
Lambs butchered for human consumption.
And only time ewes scream with hearts broken
Loss of lambs taken terrified to the abattoir.
