I had to look up PERIHELION in the dictionary - a comet's closest approach to the sun. Am I right to conclude its undefined fate might have been burning up because too close to the sun? I just went back to the poem and I can se now it is the comet speaking about its near escape from destruction, but its near approach to the sun left no impression on the behemoth of the solar system. It's too small to impact that huge mass and energy.
