School Dinners Poem by Tom Billsborough

School Dinners

Rating: 3.5

What is this concoction?
They're taking the mick.
The acne of perfection
It's called Spotted Dick!

They say that a Hot Pot
Will do you much good.
But when I look down
It looks vaguely like mud.

Boiled beef and carrots
Are easy to chew
If you happen to be
A big cat at the Zoo.

My mom was a great cook. We were too far away from home at School. They weren't that bad, as it happens, although they did have an obsession with vast seas of custard!

LOL. You put a smile on my face. Your words don't quite rhyme in my American Accent...but then I find myself trying to speak like you...and that's pretty hilarious. :) Thanks for sharing.

You lucky girl. A sticky bun on Wednesday. If I'd been in charge you'd have been forced to gobble up Cherry Cream Muffins every day and have to take part in Ice cream eating contests instead of lessons. Then everyone off to the boozer for a couple of pints to wash them down with!

we always packed a lunch four boys We had a brit in 44 to whom we all fed oranges. He had been deprived of them for years and would devour any amount

must say I'd have preferred a packed lunch sometimes. Used to have them when climbing in Austria.

Brings to mind how it will be at the other end of the spectrum of institutional life, grey purred meat and veg (a polite description of 'slop') that gets served up in hospital rest homes. Shudder.

Yes, I've seen examples. Actually our School meals were really quite good!
