Satyawati -25 Poem by Unnikrishnan Sivasankara Menon

Satyawati -25

Rating: 5.0

25. A Nation in Tears

Ambika and Ambalika
Gelled into our family.
Or did they? They had
Hardly any time for that.

Having tasted the pleasures
Of sex, never left the prince
Always demanded more
And he was more than willing

The prince was with one
Princess or the other or both
Never left the antapura
Even during the day-time

It was good for him
We just smiled inwardly,
Would stop chasing girls
And settle down in life

But, then over-indulgence
Started to take the toll on him
Pale he grew, and paler by the day
Like moon in krishnapaksha.

His wives but did not
Give up their demands
And he still wanted them
Soon he was terribly ill

The bhishaks diagnosed him
Of severe tuberculosis,
Result of over indulgence
His life was in immediate danger

Gloom pervaded the palace
And the entire nation
Best doctors from far and near
Were summoned to tend him.

All the treatments yielded
No result, his health
Deteriorated by the hour
Doctors lost their hope too.

Vichitravirya left this world
On an amavaasi day
It rained as if in Shrawan
And all eyes in the country too.

Life came to a standstill
For me; Devabrata too
Could not hold his tears;
Our dream was crumbling.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Is this the end of the progeny of Santanu? Which is known as the dynasty of the greatest ever Puru... (Please see the serial Yayati on pages) . Is it the saddest end of the great epical journey of Satyawati?

Please read on to find out.

Vocabulary:
1) Krishnapaksha: The fortnight starting on the Full Moon day and ending on the New Moon, when the moon would slowly wane and disappear totally on the New Moon.
Moreover, on the Full Moon, the moon rises exactly at dusk. Thereafter it rises late by about 40 minutes every day, so that a part of the live hours of the moon falls in the day-time. The moon seen in the day-time is pale, and paler it grows as the day progresses. This part of the live hours of the moon increases everyday until on the New Moon, it would have risen exactly at dawn and it live hours would have fallen entirely during day.

2) Antapura (S) : the quarters of ladies in the palace

3) Bhishak (S) : physician

4) Amavasi (S) : New Moon

5) Shrawan (S) : the month of July. In India, it is peak rainy season.

Oh. I will definitely be reading on, my friend. I am shocked the young man came to such an odd end... one thinks of heroic death in a battle for his country's freedom or in trying to save an innocent child from dying. But he dies from over-indulging in... I have no words... giggles, yes.... words, no! You write a fresh novel and unexpected epic, my friend.10+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hi Susie, In the original Sanskrit, it is said exactly the same and it is said Vichitravirya was affected by RAJAYAKSHMA, which can be translated as the king among Tuberculosis or The Tuberculosis that Affects Kings(?) ... I have just copied it. And many thanks for following this series and very glad that you liked it..
